Tonight's Story
This is a story about a boy and a girl who wanted to do something big. Not climb a mountain. Not fly to the moon. Something even harder — they wanted to fast for the very first time.
"I can do it!" said Zaynab at suhoor, eating her dates bravely in the dark. "Me too!" said her brother Ibrahim, pouring himself extra water. Their parents smiled. "Let's see how far you get. Allah loves that you're trying."
The morning was easy. They played, they read Quran, they helped Mama set up for iftar. But by afternoon, Zaynab's tummy was growling. Ibrahim kept looking at the clock. "Is it maghrib yet?" he asked for the tenth time.
Their grandmother sat with them and said: "Do you know why fasting is special? It's not about being hungry. It's a secret between you and Allah. Nobody can see your fast — only Allah knows you're keeping it. That makes it the most personal gift you can give Him."
Zaynab made it all the way to maghrib! Ibrahim had a small snack at Asr — and that was okay too. When the adhan came, the whole family broke their fast together. Baba hugged them both and said: "Allah is pleased with you. You tried — and that's what matters."
The Prophet ﷺ taught us that Allah rewards us for our intention. Even if you fast for half a day, even if you only skip one snack, even if you just wake up for suhoor — Allah sees your effort and He loves it. Your first fast doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.
Dua of the Night: Dua for Breaking the Fast
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ
Dhahaba al-dhama'u wabtallatil-'urooqu
"The thirst is gone, the veins are quenched, and the reward is confirmed"
This is the dua the Prophet ﷺ would say when breaking his fast. When you say it at iftar — even after your very first fast — you're doing exactly what the Prophet did. How special is that?
