The Little Pot of Water

Week 26 • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ • makkah

The Story

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, were travelling to Makkah for Umrah, a visit to worship Allah at the Ka‘bah. But the leaders of Makkah would not let them enter the city. The travellers stopped nearby, at a place called Hudaybiyyah. There, they faced another problem. They were thirsty.

In front of the Prophet ﷺ was a small pot of water. He had used some to make wudu, the special washing before prayer. His companions needed water to drink and wash with, too. But the water in that pot was all they had. How could it be enough?

The companions came towards the Prophet ﷺ. He asked what was wrong, and they explained that they had no other water. So many people needed a drink. So little water remained. Then the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand inside the pot.

Water began flowing from between his fingers! It flowed like little springs. Allah had given His Prophet ﷺ a miracle. The companions drank from the water. They made wudu, too. The little pot that had seemed nowhere near enough now had water for them all.

Jabir, one of the Prophet’s companions who was there that day, later told others what had happened. Someone asked how many people had been with the Prophet ﷺ that day. Jabir said there had been 1500! All those people had been able to drink and wash. By Allah’s permission, there had been enough for everyone.

A drink of water can seem like such a little thing. Until you are thirsty. That day, Allah’s miracle had given the people something simple and precious: water to drink. And the wonderful part? There was enough for everyone.
