The Elephant and the Ka'bah

The Story

A long, long time ago — the very year the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born — something amazing happened at the Ka'bah in Makkah.

Far away in Yemen there lived a powerful king named Abraha. He built a grand temple and wanted everyone to visit it instead of the Ka'bah.

But the people loved the Ka'bah, the special House that Prophet Ibrahim had built for Allah. Abraha grew jealous and angry. "If they won't come to my temple," he said, "then I will destroy theirs!"

Abraha gathered a huge army to march towards Makkah. And at the front marched something the people of Makkah had never seen before — enormous elephants, strong and towering.

The people were frightened. How could anyone stop an army with elephants? But they trusted that Allah would protect His House.

As the army neared the Ka'bah, the great elephant at the front stopped. It knelt down and refused to move one step closer.

They pushed it, they shouted at it, they tried to make it stand — but whenever it faced the Ka'bah, it sat right back down. Even the elephant would not harm the House of Allah!

Then Allah sent the smallest of helpers. Flocks of little birds — the ababeel — filled the sky. Each tiny bird carried small stones in its beak and claws.

Down came the stones, raining upon the mighty army. The great soldiers and their elephants could not stand against them. Abraha's army was destroyed, and the Ka'bah stood safe and untouched.

Allah teaches us in Surah Al-Feel that no army is too big for Him, and no helper is too small. He protected His House with nothing but little birds. 🐘

Dua of the Week: Dua for Protection

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلتَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A'oodhu bi kalimatillahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

"I take shelter in Allah's perfect words from any harm in what He has created."

The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua to keep us safe wherever we are. The people of Makkah trusted Allah to protect His House — we say this when we want Allah to protect ours.

Quran Verse: Surah Al-Feel 105:1

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ ٱلْفِيلِ

"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant?"
